Liverpool are reportedly “close to appointing” Etienne Reijnen as an assistant manager at Liverpool this summer, suggesting Arne Slot is staying on.

Slot is under immense pressure to keep his job at Anfield, and one huge claim from supposed journalist Chris Royce earlier this week suggested that he will part company by mutual consent in the coming days.

“The Liverpool board have decided NOT to continue with Arne Slot as manager for the 26/27 season. Having previously opted to give Slot more time to turn things around, the decision to sack Slot was made over the weekend following conversations with senior players.

“Slot is set to take change of Liverpool’s final game of the season on Sunday. The Liverpool board are looking to replace Slot with a Head Coach rather than a manager, hence the lack of interest in Xabi Alonso. No decision on Slot’s replacement has yet been made.”

Despite this, reliable journalist Dominic King of The Telegraph has taken to X to say that Reijnen is set to join Liverpool’s backroom team in the summer, in a big nod to Slot staying on:

“Liverpool close to appointing Etienne Reijnen as an assistant to Arne Slot, a move that will cease – for the time being – speculation about his future. Reijnen, says Slot, is ‘some I rate very highly'”.

A big indicator that Arne Slot will remain as Liverpool’s head coach

This feels like a significant update, and one that is likely to cause frustration among those Liverpool supporters who want to see Slot move on this summer, following a season of unrest.

The Reds simply wouldn’t be hiring someone who the Dutchman rates and knows well if they weren’t planning to retain his services, though, with the 39-year-old currently the assistant at Feyenoord.

If that proves to be the case, the hope is that Reijnen can have a big impact at Liverpool, playing his part in the team’s fortunes improving next season.

The 2025/26 campaign simply hasn’t been good enough, with the Reds looking badly coached and lacking in elite levels of fitness, and if that doesn’t change drastically in the opening weeks of next term, Slot won’t last long.
