There are now “serious questions” being asked of Liverpool head coach Arne Slot, following the dire 1-1 draw at home to Tottenham in the Premier League.
The Dutchman is under as much pressure as he has ever been under at Anfield, as a bitterly disappointing season continues for the Reds.
There was a painful inevitability about Liverpool conceding late to Spurs on Sunday afternoon, as the Premier League champions failed to see out yet another game in the league.
Speaking to Football Insider, former scout Mick Brown dropped a 10-word verdict on Slot’s future, saying, “serious questions are going to be asked of Arne Slot,” suggesting a change could be close in the dugout.
He also then added: “There have been doubts since right at the start of the season, everybody expected them to turn things around, but this result didn’t come as a surprise.
“You went into it thinking Liverpool should be beating Tottenham convincingly because of how they’ve been playing recently, so ultimately it’s a disappointment. Ultimately the blame does come back on the manager when things aren’t going right.
“They’re not as effective going forward as they were last season, and they’re certainly not as strong defensively, they always look like conceding. If Liverpool feel those issues are down to Slot and his management of the team, then maybe they will have to make a decision about his future.”
The time has come for a change of head coach at Liverpool
The Spurs game feels like the straw that broke the camel’s back for so many Liverpool supporters, with the boos at Anfield noticeable at the final whistle.
Slot has had plenty of backing during a tough season, but he is continually overseeing dull, disjointed performances, and the Reds are in genuine danger of missing out on Champions League qualification in May.
It feels like the right time for a change, with someone like Steven Gerrard coming in for the rest of the season in an interim role, in order to give Liverpool a Michael Carrick-like bounce.
Xabi Alonso could then take over the reins in the summer, or another leading candidate for the job, guiding the Reds into a new era after Slot.
