Liverpool have reportedly failed to tie Luis Diaz to a new contract and with his deal expiring in two years, Chelsea apparently have “plans to sign him” this summer.
Since Arne Slot’s arrival at Anfield, Diaz has had a change of role. Slot seems to prefer Cody Gakpo on the left wing and given his 16 goals and five assists, it’s easy to see why.
Diaz is still a vital part of the Liverpool starting lineup and although he is not as prolific as Salah and Gakpo have been this season, his close control and intelligence make him a suitable heir to Roberto Firmino in the false nine role.
The former Porto star has yet to be linked with a concrete move elsewhere although claims from his home country might change that.
According to Colombian news outlet Antena2, Chelsea have “plans to sign” the Liverpool forward with the claim being made that “Luis Diaz has failed to renew his contract” due to financial disagreements.
Manchester City have reportedly shown interest in Diaz as well while Chelsea seem to have the most concrete interest and would like to have him on the left wing for the 2025/26 Premier League season.
The Blues will play on Liverpool’s desire not to lose him for free in order to convince them to part ways this summer but nothing has emerged domestically to suggest Diaz is leaving the club.
Diaz is quietly playing an important role for the Liverpool attack
This season, Diaz has 12 goals and three assists but it’s link-up play and chance creation that are so important to his role in Slot’s new-look Liverpool attack.
With Gakpo and Salah on the wings, Slot needs Diaz to occupy centre-backs to allow the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones to make their runs from midfield into the box.
Losing Diaz in the summer would not be ideal given the current situation at the club but more than that, the Colombian has been a wonderful player for the club since his £37m move from Porto in 2022.
