Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich is out of contract at the end of the season and Liverpool are among his suitors as they eye a summer move to bring him to Anfield.

This season has been a wild ride for Liverpool fans. It began with journalists, pundits and rival fans predicting that new manager Arne Slot would fail to live up to the lofty standards set by Jurgen Klopp during his time in the Anfield hot seat.

Fast forward to the present and Liverpool are seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table, into the final of the Carabao Cup and having topped the Champions League group table, the Reds are also into the knockout stages of Europe’s elite competition.

A key part of the Reds’ success has been the form of their midfielders with Ryan Gravenberch, in particular, playing a key role. After Martin Zubimendi rejected Liverpool in the summer transfer window, Slot was forced to play Ryan Gravenberch as a no.6.

And how the 22-year-old has flourished. You can now make the argument that Gravenberch is one of the best midfielders in the world but Liverpool are still being linked with specialist defensive midfielders.

Enter Joshua Kimmich.

Liverpool hold talks with Joshua Kimmich but Bayern Munich are hopeful he’ll sign a new deal

Liverpool have already held talks with Kimmich’s representatives and will compete with Manchester City for his signature if the midfielder decides against signing a new deal with Bayern Munich.

The German international’s contract €375,000 per week contract expires at the end of June and so he will be available for free if a deal isn’t struck with Bayern.

Although, it seems as though Bayern are hopeful an agreement will be reached before the end of the season.

Speaking to BR24, Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer says that although the final decision ultimately rests with Kimmich, the German club is “cautiously optimistic” the 29-year-old will remain in Bavaria for the foreseeable future.

“I’m cautiously optimistic on Kimmich signing new deal with us,” the Bayern president stated. “In the end, he has to decide, but I think he knows what everyone has in FC Bayern. We are showing our ambition and project.”

It will be interesting to see how this plays out but if Liverpool successfully poached Kimmich, that would be an absolute steal.

Of course, his wages could be an issue given Liverpool’s unstable contract situation but there is no denying the class and quality the midfielder possesses.
