A new Liverpool exit rumour has emerged regarding a “world-class” player, following a new update from journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The Reds need to focus on adding to their squad in January or next summer, having started the season in disappointing fashion, but keeping hold of players is also key.
One player whose long-term Liverpool future is still up in the air is Federico Chiesa, though, with the Italian staying put for the time being.
Speaking on his Here We Go podcast [via Football365], Romano claimed that the 28-year-old could potentially be a target for Serie A clubs in the January transfer window, even though he appears to be happy at Anfield.
“It’s been a strange start to the season for Chiesa, also because at the very beginning of the summer window, the plan was to leave, and then everything changed several times with Arne Slot and with the management,” Romano said.
“The desire of Federico Chiesa is to finish the season at Liverpool and then assess the situation in the summer. When Chiesa goes public and says ‘I want to stay here, I want to compete for my spot’, it’s the reality. Chiesa wants to continue with Liverpool.
“Then, obviously, he wants to play – he needs to play – otherwise in January I would not be surprised if Italian clubs return to the table and try again to get Chiesa from Liverpool. They might try.
“But at the moment, the desire of Liverpool and Chiesa is to continue together. I don’t think it’s going to be an easy move in January, but interest remains and we have to follow the game time in the next two months.”
Should Liverpool keep Chiesa beyond January?
Chiesa is such a popular figure among the Liverpool fans, with his song one of the most loved currently, and he has contributed positively this, not least scoring a big late goal at home to Bournemouth on the opening weekend of the campaign.
Keeping hold of him beyond January makes sense, considering the Reds’ attacking squad depth isn’t great currently, with the Italy international once described as “world-class” by Alessandro Pierini.
For Liverpool, keeping Chiesa until the summer is the wisest decision, at which point a decision then needs to be made about his future.
