Widespread reports suggest that Liverpool are actively pursuing Real Madrid’s Rodrygo but there isn’t total consensus among the most reliable outlets.

Yesterday, we covered claims from Spanish outlet AS suggesting that Liverpool were sending a representative to Madrid to discuss, in person, a transfer for Rodrygo to Anfield.

ESPN Brasil, an outlet considered to be reliable for Brazilian football news, corroborated the story, reporting that Liverpool have indeed entered the race to sign Rodrygo.

Today, talkSPORT chief football correspondent Alex Crook claims that the Reds have held “preliminary talks over a possible deal.”

However, closer to home, independent Liverpool outlet This is Anfield claims that there is no truth to the claims that the club has made an approach of any kind.

They claim that Liverpool have no intentions to sell Luis Diaz, whom Rodrygo would be replacing.

It all hinges on this line: “Whether the situation changes with a convincing offer for Diaz remains to be seen, but as it stands Rodrygo is not on the agenda.”

Keeping Luis Diaz remains crucial but if he is sold, Rodrygo would be a sensational replacement

While many supporters seem okay with the idea of selling Luis Diaz, it would be very beneficial to keep him amidst all the change and transformation the squad is already undergoing.

Diaz played out of position for the majority of Liverpool’s Premier League winning campaign but with Hugo Ekitike set to join the club, keeping Diaz is a powerful move.

Not only does it mean Liverpool retain his experience and versatility, but it means he can be restored to his preferred left-wing role although it remains to be seen how that will go down with Cody Gakpo.

Of course, if Diaz gets his wish and leaves the club, Rodrygo would be an amazing replacement. Although, his reported €240,000 per week (£200k) wages will be a big cost to incur.

Liverpool are also still to find a club for Darwin Nunez but the Uruguayan isn’t anywhere near as crucial to Arne Slot’s side as Diaz is.

It will be very interesting to see how this story evolves but Liverpool are by no means in a position that forces them to release Diaz – unhappy as he may be with his current contract.
