Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones will look to seal a move away from the club this summer, assuming Arne Slot stays on as head coach.
While Mohamed Salah stands front and centre as the Reds players who appears to have fallen out with Slot the most this season, rumours have suggested that Jones is in the same boat.
The fact that the 25-year-old reacted with a thumbs-up to Salah’s social media big at the Dutchman last weekend further added fuel to the fire in that respect.
Now, speaking to Football Insider, former scout Mick Brown talked up the idea of Jones finding a new club if Slot doesn’t leave Liverpool before next season.
“Curtis Jones has been a very reliable player at Liverpool. He will fill in wherever he’s needed, often at right-back, and always works hard and puts in a shift, you never have to worry about whether he’ll turn up. That’s such a valuable player to have in your squad, but ultimately he wants to play in midfield, and he’s not being given that opportunity.
“He’s been on the bench a lot this season and when he is starting games he’s starting out of position, and as much as he’s willing to do that, it can be frustrating. It wouldn’t surprise me too much if he does push for a move away, especially when he is posting things on social media saying the season hasn’t been good enough.
“A lot might depend on what they do with the manager, because he’s under a lot of pressure and a change could mean Jones gets more opportunities. But if things stay as they are and he’s being used only as a makeshift right-back, he’s going to have doubts about his future at the club.”
Curtis Jones a potential big loss for Liverpool
Jones has struggled to become the key starter that he would have hoped to be at Liverpool, but he is an invaluable squad player whose peak years are approaching.
The midfielder is also capable of doing a job at right-back, and the fact that he knows the club so well is important, too, having been there throughout his academy days.
It does feel as though Jones and Slot’s relationship may be broken, though, hence the Scouser’s lack of starts this season, which suggests a move away could be on the cards.
Should that happen, it would be a sad way for Jones’ Liverpool career to end, with plenty of fans no doubt preferring to Slot leave instead of him.
