Mohamed Salah’s Liverpool future has been a major talking point for some time, with reliable journalist David Ornstein now giving a key new update regarding him.
The 33-year-old is now preparing for Egypt’s semi-final clash with Sadio Mane’s Senegal on Wednesday, as the two Reds legends meet at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Salah being away from Liverpool may not be a bad thing currently, as it allows him some space after his controversial interview late last year, in which he stated he had no relationship with Arne Slot and hinted at playing his last game for the club.
According to The Athletic‘s Ornstein, Salah is now expected to stay at Liverpool until the end of the season, at which point there should be a development regarding his future:
“Similar may apply to Mohamed Salah’s position. Despite recent uncertainty, the Egypt attacker is fully expected to finish the campaign at Anfield. It will be hoped his situation then settles down and that he sees out the rest of his agreement, which runs until June 2027. However, if problems remain, it is possible conversations will take place about parting ways early.”
Is a Salah exit this summer the ideal outcome for Liverpool?
It is great news to hear that Salah will likely remain at Liverpool until at least the summer, considering what a sad way it would have been for his Reds career to end had he left in January.
This will allow the Premier League champions to have an elite player in their ranks until the campaign reaches its conclusion, before a big decision is then made by all parties.
Salah will have a year left on his contract in the summer, and if Liverpool feel that he has peaked as a player, they may feel that cashing on him is the right decision, rather than losing him on a free transfer in 202.
The player himself could also want a new challenge after nine years at Anfield, but him staying until his contract expires would still be far from a bad thing.
Hopefully, Salah still has another chapter to write in his Liverpool career, and it will be interesting to see how good or bad his form is upon his return from AFCON, having shone in the tournament.
