David Ornstein has made an exciting claim about Liverpool’s summer transfer plans as Arne Slot looks to build on winning the Premier League in his first season as boss.
Mohamed Salah’s form is the standout factor behind Liverpool’s domestic success this season. He has 28 goals and 18 assists and if you were to add someone like Alexander Isak into the mix, the Reds would be a terrifying side to face.
The Swede has 22 goals and six assists in the Premier League – third behind Salah and Erling Haaland for most goals.
Salah and Isak actually have more goals combined than Manchester United have scored as a club in the league. That says a lot about how good they are but probably even more about poor Ruben Amorim’s side is.
Liverpool are not looking to stand still this summer as widespread reports in England suggest the Reds are set for one of their most active summers of recruitment in recent time.
Alexander Isak is Liverpool’s dream summer signing, says David Ornstein
Speaking to The Athletic FC podcast, David Ornstein says that with Darwin Nunez set to leave the club, Liverpool are looking to bring in to replace him and the dream target is Isak.
“There is an expectation that Darwin Nunez will leave and so Liverpool will need to bring in somebody in that position, you assume.
“It’s scary to think if Liverpool manage to get a goalscorer, what on earth they could do in domestic and European competition.
“I do think Isak would be the one that Liverpool would look to, as would Arsenal and many other clubs. It’s less realistic to think it’s going to happen, though, because if Newcastle qualify for the Champions League, I think it’s not even a conversation…”
Newcastle United’s Champions League qualification quest will be a major factor in Isak’s future
The Premier League currently has five sides vying for the two remaining Champions League spots. Newcastle are third with 62 points, Manchester City are fourth with 61 points, Chelsea are fifth with 60 points and Nottinham Forest are sixth with 60 points.
And Aston Villa are seventh with 57 points and cling onto an outside chance of qualifyig. Forest have a game in hand and if they win it, they will upset everyone above them.
Ornstein continued, discussing Isak and how Champions League qualification will impact his summer plans.
He said: “If they don’t qualify for the Champions League, maybe there is a window of opportunity, but I don’t think it really changes the price much of the transfer fee, let alone the salary request and agents’ commissions.
“And any club that’s going to commit to that level of resource, if indeed there’s any opportunity, is basically going to use all of their budget on that player.”
