Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez is now “expected to leave” the club along with Trent Alexander-Arnold this summer, according to the reliable David Ornstein.

The Uruguayan is now coming towards the end of his third season as a Reds player, but he remains a divisive figure among the fanbase.

Arne Slot has seemingly not been convinced by him since replacing Jurgen Klopp, even using Luis Diaz as a centre forward instead at times.

Speaking on NBC Sports [via Give Me Sport], Ornstein said that Nunez will likely depart Liverpool this summer, joining Alexander-Arnold out of the exit door:

“It’s a different situation with Trent Alexander-Arnold. The expectation is that he will leave for Real Madrid as a free agent at the end of the season. Perhaps some criticism for Liverpool, for FSG on that front, for leaving it late on a younger player who has come through the system here at Anfield.

“It’s going to be a really busy summer with recruitment. I think they’re in the mix for Dean Huijsen at Bournemouth, the centre-half, and Milos Kerkez, the left-back at Bournemouth. And perhaps a striker, with Darwin Nunez expected to leave as well.”

Time for Nunez to leave Liverpool

Nunez is a popular figure at Anfield, due to his personality and passion, but the brutal reality is that he hasn’t kicked on nearly enough since joining, even though Ally McCoist has said of him after the 1-0 win away to Paris Saint-Germain:

“Unbelievable football from Darwin Nunez, because nine times out of ten he hits this. He doesn’t, he takes the right option. Watch Nunez, usually he pulls the trigger there, it looks a simple pass and it is but it’s there to hit first time, that’s the secret of it.”

For that reason, this summer is the logical time for Liverpool to sell Nunez, with a superior striker needed to come in to make Liverpool an even bigger force.

Diogo Jota has been an excellent servant, but he is showing signs of peaking, with injuries catching up with him, so it wouldn’t be a shock to see him move on, too.
