Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann is struggling to believe that Bayern Munich are prepared to meet Liverpool’s asking price.

According to recent reports, Liverpool are demanding in the region of £72.5m to sell Diaz this summer and with two years left on his contract, it’s a fair valuation for one of the best forwards in Europe.

Yet, Liverpool’s refusal to offer him another long-term contract is a warning that Bayern Munich and Barcelona should heed, according to Hamann.

If, for instance, Liverpool renewed his contract for another two years, Diaz would be 32 by the time this hypothetical deal expires. So, it’s understandable why FSG are refusing to appease the former Porto star.

When you consider that Mohamed Salah – the forward with the most Premier League records in his name – had to wait for over a year to receieve his two contract extensions, it figures that FSG were never going to offer him a new deal.

Yet, Bayern are seemingly prepared to match the Reds terms.

Luis Diaz is worth over £70m but Bayern Munich may be making a mistake, says Didi Hamann

Speaking to Sky Germany, the former Liverpool star raised his concerns 0ver Bayern, the club he started his pro career with, signing Diaz for big money at his age with virtually no re-sale value.

“To now bring in Luis Diaz, a 28-year-old South American who played 50 games per season for four or five years and has those long flights home, which are also a problem,” Hamann said.

“To pay 70 or 80 million for that, while the sale value is zero because he would be 32 at the end of his contract, I wonder what they even have the campus for.”

Liverpool, on the other hand, can turn around and reinvest that sum into signing Rodrygo, a player four years younger than Diaz effectively solidifying the left-wing position for several years to come.

Of course, signing the Brazilian will be no simple matter as Real Madrid are looking for over €100m (£87m) to sell. Rodrygo is also not keen to leave but if Real cannot guarantee him game time, he may be forced to leave in order to play enough to be in contention for the Brazil World Cup squad next summer.
