Despite Trent Alexander-Arnold announcing his departure at the end of the season, it remains likelier that Liverpool will recruit a left back as their first signing of the summer.
Ian Wright said recently that he thinks Liverpool have already completed a deal to sign Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth after the Hungarian left-back has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield over the last several months.
It’s no surprise that Liverpool view him as someone that can improve Arne Slot’s team given his energetic and consistent performances for the Cherries. He did get a little stick for how he defended against Mohamed Salah earlier in the season but – it is Salah after all.
Liverpool find themselves with two left-backs that aren’t quite good enough for a team that has the potential to kick on next season and challenge for everything. They won the Premier League this season but didn’t have enough about them to win any of the cup tournaments.
With Kostas Tsimikas expected to be moved on, Andy Robertson will compete with Kerkez or whoever the Reds sign to fill the role.
Jamie Redknapp says Kerkez and Robbo are more than enough for Liverpool next season
Former Liverpool star Jamie Redknapp has weighed in on the left-back debate and believes the Reds should hold onto Robertson to fight for game time with Kerkez.
“I certainly wouldn’t write Andy Robertson off just yet, he’s still a top player,” the pundit said on Sky Sports after Liverpool lost 3-1 to Chelsea.
“He’s a great professional, you make sure you keep him even if you do bring in Kerkez.
“Kerkez has been amazing for Bournemouth. He’s like a younger version and that’s going to be the key. I’m sure they are looking at who they can bring in.”
Redknapp also hopes Liverpool sign Hugo Ekitike
“Ekitike has had a mention for Liverpool,” said Redknapp.
“It has not worked out for Darwin Nunez, that might be a player surplus to requirements and they bring in another one in his place.”
Whether or not it’s Ekitike or a more prolific, proven name like Alexander Isak, it’s clear that Liverpool are going to need a slight change in approach now that it is confirmed that Trent Alexander-Arnold will leave the club at the end of the season.
