Liverpool’s search for a left-winger could be edging closer to a breakthrough – and Jamie Gittens may well be the player to finally fill that void.

The Borussia Dortmund starlet, who came through Manchester City’s academy, has been turning heads in Germany thanks to his exciting, direct style of play.

In the mould of former Dortmund success stories like Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham, Gittens is now attracting serious attention and Liverpool are believed to be near the front of the queue.

Gittens would be an exciting replacement for Diaz if sold

With Luis Díaz reportedly up for sale this summer, Liverpool are planning to bring in a natural wide forward to fit into Arne Slot’s tactical setup.

And now, one major development could accelerate their pursuit of a replacement.

According to respected German journalist Patrick Berger, Gittens has handed in a transfer request at Dortmund ahead of the summer window. Dortmund, for their part, are said to have accepted his decision and are prepared to let him go.

Gittens’ form has dipped in the second half of the season, which has led to Dortmund lowering their valuation. While Football Transfers currently rates his value at €71m, the final price should be lower.

That would make him an attractive proposition for Liverpool, who have admired his potential for some time. Crucially, Gittens is keen on a move to the Premier League, opening the door for a potential switch to Anfield.

Latest on Liverpool interest and why he makes sense for the Reds

Writing in his **Give Me Sport** newsletter, Fabrizio Romano reports: “He’s been on Chelsea’s list for months now, Liverpool have been scouting him too.

“It’s gonna be interesting to see Borussia Dortmund’s stance, but for sure JBG will be one to watch in the summer. There’s already movement in terms of calls and inquiries.”

Despite recent struggles, the 20-year-old winger remains one of the most exciting dribblers in the Bundesliga. He currently leads the league in completed take-ons (76) – a key attribute for Arne Slot, who has a clear preference for direct, one-vs-one wingers in his system.

At Feyenoord, Slot relied on wide players with explosive pace, technical flair, and the ability to beat defenders consistently. Gittens fits that profile perfectly.

Homegrown status adds further appeal

A move for Gittens would also tick a major box from a squad registration standpoint: as a former Manchester City youth product, Gittens would qualify as a homegrown player in the Premier League – a valuable commodity for any top club.

If Liverpool can secure Gittens for a reduced fee, it would represent a smart investment in elite potential. He may not be the finished product just yet, but the raw tools – dribbling, agility, vision, pace – are all there.

More than anything, I like his confidence. At 20, to have the confidence to take a senior team’s attacking burdens on his back is very, very impressive.
