One new Liverpool signing is “expected to start” in the Community Shield this weekend, according to reliable journalist James Pearce.

The Reds take on Crystal Palace at Wembley on Sunday afternoon, looking to win an early piece of silverware at the beginning of the season.

Writing on X, Pearce claimed that new signing Jeremie Frimpong will start at right-back against the Eagles, with Conor Bradley missing out through injury:

“Frimpong expected to start at right-back at Wembley on Sunday, but Slot also sees him having a role to play further forward deputising for Salah during AFCON this season.”

A great chance to see new Liverpool signings

To some, the Community Shield is nothing more than a glorified friendly, but Sunday’s game is still a great opportunity to watch this title-winning Liverpool side in action.

There are a host of new signings to watch, including Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Hugo Ekitike, and perhaps most excitingly, Florian Wirtz, as the Reds look to make a flying start to the season.

Arne Slot is certainly pleased that he has signed Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, talking up what a versatile option he is in his pre-Community Shield press conference:

“We definitely thought about that (Salah being away at AFCON). We brought in Jeremie Frimpong because we think he can play as a right full-back, but I also feel that he can play as a right winger.

“We will miss Mo for a maximum of six games, but that’s quite a lot in the Premier League, especially when you see how well he did last season. Signing Jeremie was for multiple reasons but one of them was that he could replace Mo if Mo is not there. There are other options as well but Jeremie is definitely one of them.”

It will be interesting to see who becomes Liverpool’s first-choice right-back once Bradley is available again, but Frimpong is a fantastic option to have, both in that position and further up the pitch.

Depth is vital if the Reds are to defend their Premier League crown, as well as go far in the Champions League, so it is a healthy selection headache for Slot to have.
