As Arne Slot battles to save his job as Liverpool’s head coach this summer, journalist Fabrizio Romano has provided a big update on the situation.

Slot is a man under huge pressure, not least after last Friday’s woeful 4-2 defeat at Aston Villa in the Premier League, with the Dutchman assessing the loss after the game:

“Damaging because we needed either a win or maybe, maybe, maybe two draws would have been enough as well. But now we know one thing for sure – that we need a win next week if we have to do it ourselves. As we all know, other teams, of course, need to pick up points as well for us to need a win.

“So that’s really damaging that we were not able to get a result, let alone a win here today. There were parts in the game where I felt a result could have gone our way. But I think what people are mainly focused on is the period after the 2-1 where we couldn’t find any momentum anymore and we conceded two other goals. That was the most difficult period in the game.”

Now, writing on X, Romano has dropped a six-word update on Slot’s future, saying there will be a season review”, suggesting that the tide may have turned with FSG, amid recent reports that they will stick with him beyond the summer.

Arne Slot’s time is up at Liverpool this summer

Slot should always be appreciated for last season’s Premier League title triumph, but this time around, it simply hasn’t been good enough. It has been shocking, in fact.

Admittedly, the 47-year-old can’t be blamed for everything, but the buck stops with the manager, and Liverpool’s football has been awful, the players look unfit and demotivated, and it’s time for a change.

The fact that Romano appears to have changed his tune about a season review for Slot feels significant, suggesting that those high up at Liverpool feel his time could be up.

He appears to have lost the dressing room and made strange tactical calls all season, and bringing in a new face to take the team forward feels like a must rather than a possibility.
