Liverpool have now suffered a fresh injury concern at the start of the international break, with Federico Chiesa withdrawn from Italy duty.

The 28-year-old’s Reds career still hasn’t got going nearly two years after arriving, with fitness issues and patchy form holding him back.

Chiesa could move on from Liverpool in the summer transfer window, but he will be hoping for a strong end to the season, proving his worth at club level and also showing that he should play a part for Italy at the 2026 World Cup.

Sadly for the winger, he has suffered a blow right at the beginning of the March international break, with Fabrizio Romano confirming on X that he has returned home for fitness reasons:

“Federico Chiesa has withdrawn from Italy squad after medical checks confirmed he isn’t fit to play. In agreement with his club, the Liverpool forward has left the camp and Bologna striker Cambiaghi replaces Federico.”

The latest blow for Liverpool hero Federico Chiesa

Chiesa’s career is threatening to peter out, having once been such a potent attacking player, winning Euro 2020 with Italy and arguably proving to be one of their best players in the competition.

He cannot seem to stay fit for long periods, which is such a shame considering what a popular figure, being hailed by Virgil van Dijk in the past:

“Fede is an amazing character, he works so hard and has been unlucky with injuries but we are all here for him and we all know what kind of impact he could have. He’s a great character and we all love him, I think everyone can see that, and he’s loved by the fans, and to produce moments like he has [against Bournemouth] is something we all want to see.”

This summer feels like the right time for Liverpool and Chiesa to part ways, considering his lack of football over the past two seasons, allowing them to receive a fee for him.

If he does leave, he will be remembered fondly by Reds supporters, having always given his all for the cause and shown a great team ethic.
