Liverpool are still locked in contract talks with Virgil van Dijk after his agents were spotted sitting next to sporting director Richard Hughes.

The Dutchman is widely regarded as the best centre-back in the world with Jamie Carragher even claiming recently that he’s too good for the current level of football.

Since he moved to Liverpool, the Reds have become one of the best teams in the world and are currently the best in the Premier League and the Champions League, but if van Dijk leaves, that stands to change rapidly.

Van Dijk is out of contract in the summer unless Liverpool find a way to keep him a the club which seems plausible given the latest word from journalist Fabrizio Romano

Liverpool dismantled Tottenham in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg, running out 4-0 winners and 4-1 on aggregate after giving the Londoners a little bit of hope in the first leg.

As van Dijk and co. dominated Spurs, the Dutchman’s agents were spotted in the crowd sitting alongside Liverpool chief Richard Hughes – the man in charge of contract extensions with van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Reporting on YouTube, Fabrizio Romano confirms that there is ongoing dialogue between van Dijk’s agents and Richard Hughes.

Romano said: “Something to say on Virgil van Dijk. It’s true that the agents of Virgil van Dijk were sitting next to director of football at Liverpool, Richard Hughes, for the game against Tottenham.

“So, there is still a very good conversation, a very good relationship, between Liverpool and the agents of Van Dijk.”

Ongoing talks a good sign that van Dijk will stay

While it is by no means conclusive evidence that Virgil van Dijk will sign a new contract with Liverpool, ongoing talks with the club suggests the centre-back wants to remain on Merseyside.

He has been so important to Liverpool since he joined that it’s quite difficult to imagine them without him. Especially when you consider that, his ACL aside, he has barely been out of the starting lineup.

In fact, he has only missed 11 games since he returned from his ACL rupture in 2021.
