Liverpool “can keep spending” money this summer despite already paying huge amounts on new signings, according to finance expert Stefan Borson.

The Reds have already had a summer to remember, not only breaking their transfer record on Florian Wirtz, but also bringing in the likes of Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez.

It looks like Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak could be the next player through the door, with the Swede potentially costing even more than Wirtz.

Speaking to Football Insider, Borson was bullish about the Reds’ spending, saying there is no reason why it can’t continue this summer:

“I think they can still spend.  Clearly, they’re making a choice to really go for it. I think for their fans the signings they are making are very exciting. I think the squad looks brilliant. It looks good right now, but if they were to sign Isak and a centre-half as well, then the squad’s going to look fantastic.

“They would be clear favorites to win the league with those two players. I think obviously just with Isak, they’d be clear favorites.  Whether they’re clear favorites now, maybe. We will have to see how City and Arsenal land, and whether Chelsea are too knackered after the summer or not.  But yes, Liverpool can keep spending. They have always been able to spend. It’s always been a choice.

“There has always been a narrative that they just can’t compete. It’s always been nonsense.  It’s always been a choice by their ownership not to aggressively compete in the transfer market.”

Music to the ears of Liverpool supporters

Liverpool fans will love this update, having so often grown frustrated with FSG’s relatively frugal approach in the transfer market, only signing Federico Chiesa last summer, for example.

There has been so much ambition on show this time around, though, and if Isak comes in, as well as Marc Gueehi, it would be an almost perfect transfer window.

It is worth stressing that Liverpool have also sold shrewdly, with the likes of Jarell Quansah and Luis Diaz moving on – Chiesa, Harvey Elliott and Darwin Nunez could depart, too – so it has been far from reckless.

Arne Slot is building a squad that is primed to defend the Premier League title, though, and the thought of having both Wirtz and Isak in the same team is particularly mouthwatering.
