Mohamed Salah rarely makes any comments to the press or online but when he does, it always causes a stir.

After Liverpool drew 3-3 with Leeds United in December, Salah made a damning statement to the press, suggesting there was an attempt from within the club to force him out. He told the media that his relationship with Arne Slot, which was previously a healthy one, had diminished into a virtually non-existent working relationship.

This month, Liverpool lost 4-2 to Aston Villa in what was an all-around embarrassing result for the Reds in their hunt for Champions League football next season.

Salah then took to social media to voice his concerns about the direction that Liverpool is heading in, calling for a return to heavy metal football.

The post said: “I have witnessed this club go from doubters to believers, and from believers to champions. It took hard work and I always did everything I could to help the club get there. Nothing makes me prouder than that. Us crumbling to yet another defeat this season was very painful and not what our fans deserve.

“I want to see Liverpool go back to being the heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear and back to being a team that wins trophies. That is the football I know how to play and that is the identity that needs to be recovered and kept for good. It cannot be negotiable and everyone that joins this club should adapt to it.

“Winning some games here and there is not what Liverpool should be about. All teams win games. Liverpool will always be a club that means a great deal to me and to my family. I want to see it succeed for long after I have moved on.

“As I’ve always said, qualifying to next season’s Champions League is the bare minimum and I will do everything I can to make that happen.”

Florian Wirts speaks up about Arne Slot and Mohamed Salah rift after explosive social media post went viral

In an interview with The Athletic, Florian Wirtz defended Slot and addressed rumours of an internal falling out with the Dutchman across the Liverpool squad.

“The outside world is always trying to create something between the team and the manager,” Wirtz said.

“But it’s totally different in this building. We are working well every day with this manager and his staff. There is no thought about not being behind the manager. This is just something (talked about) on the outside.”

Speculation online was rife after Salah made his post, with several Liverpool players liking it on Twitter and Instagram, but Wirtz has denied any suggestion of a player mutiny against the manager.

When asked about whether or not Liverpool players liking Salah’s post is an indication that the squad doesn’t approve of Slot’s coaching, Wirtz replied: “No, nothing like that. I like Mo’s mentality in general — how he sees things, how he works. He’s a guy you can listen to, because he has seen a lot.

“He wasn’t attacking anyone. With the ‘likes’ players gave, I think it was made too big. For me, it was just a thing that he wanted to say because he’s leaving. He wanted to make everyone in the club alert that we have to work more and do better.

“We are all anything but happy with this season. I think we can still make a little bit out of it by qualifying for the Champions League on Sunday. We have to do that. Then in the summer, we need to clear our heads and attack next season, because we have a very good squad and we can do much better.”
