Luis Suarez is one of the greatest players to ever grace the Premier League and his love for a nutmeg resulted in some classic moments for Liverpool supporters to enjoy.
The three and a half years Luis Suarez spent at Liverpool were some of the most chaotic, beautiful and frustrating of any player to grace the Anfield turf.
On one hand, the Uruguayan scored 82 goals and on the other, he spent 25 games suspended for various reasons.
If only there was an official record kept for nutmegs because it stands to reason Luis Suarez would top that for every league he’s ever played in.
Which brings us to the banner that Liverpool fans used to display during the time Suarez was at the club.
James Collins reveals Luis Suarez banner that foreshadowed his match vs Suarez
Former West Ham defender Collins has recalled the time he came up against Suarez at Anfield in 2013.
During a 0-0 draw, the defender came up against Suarez a number of times and while the striker didn’t score that day, he nutmegged Collins a few times.
“Anfield, I think it was 2013. I don’t know if anyone ever really remembers their best game, but that game stands out,” Collins told That Peter Crouch Podcast.
“Why it stands out I think is Suarez was Suarez at the time, unplayable at points. He was little and I didn’t really fancy playing against a little player. I was better against the big ones.
“I remember being on the Anfield pitch and looking up and seeing a sign that said ‘Luis Suarez could nutmeg a mermaid’ and thinking. ‘yeah, this is going to be tough!’
“I’ve never heard that, nutmeg a mermaid, that’s brilliant!” laughed Peter Crouch. “He was brilliant at it.”
Fan digs up old clip of Collins v Suarez
True to form, Liverpool fans were able to find clips of that game and it’s safe to say that Suarez got the better of Collins even if the West Ham defender kept a clean sheet that day.
At one point, Suarez nutmegs Collins and the centre-back just gives up!
