“Been told…” – Fresh claim emerges about how much Liverpool tried to sign Marc Guehi

|

Liverpool tried to involve Joe Gomez in a deal to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace on deadline day, according to a new claim from journalist Chris Williams.

The Reds had the joy of signing Alexander Isak in a record-breaking move from Newcastle United on Monday, but unfortunately, they missed out on Guehi.

The Palace captain ended up staying at Selhurst Park, with manager Oliver Glasner putting his foot down and saying his team didn’t have enough defensive depth without him.

It remains to be seen if Liverpool return for Guehi in January or next summer, but Williams has taken to X to say that the Reds offered the Eagles Gomez on loan as part of the deal, only to be thwarted in their efforts:

“Been told this morning that Palace enquired about taking Gomez on loan to help move the Guehi deal to completion, that request was turned down. Palace felt they gave the best chance for a deal to progress, and cancelled the transfer when they felt no compromise was forthcoming.”

Will Liverpool return for Guehi?

Missing out on Guehi was undoubtedly disappointing for Liverpool, given his status as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League currently, also becoming a key man for England.

The fact that his exit video at Palace had even reportedly been completed shows how close he was to joining the Reds, so it is a cruel setback for the England international.

On the plus side, Gomez has again stayed put at Liverpool, and if he can remain fit this season, he will continue to be an asset for Arne Slot.

Sadly, that is a big if with him at times, with a new fitness issue never too far away from holding him back.

Hopefully, Liverpool go back in for Guehi when the January transfer window arrives, at which point he will only have months remaining on his current deal.

If not, a move for the Palace next summer would also make sense, considering he is still only 25, and he could even replace Ibrahima Konate at that point, should the Frenchman not sign a new deal at Anfield.
