Liverpool are edging closer and closer to being able to announce a second contract extension in a week with Virgil van Dijk very close to signing a new deal.

Mohamed Salah celebrated his new two-year contract with an assist in the 2-1 win over West Ham on the weekend.

His excellent turn and pass to assist Luis Diaz mean

s he needs two assists to equal Henry and De Bruyne’s record of 20 Premier League assists in a single season.

Van Dijk, who was involved in Andy Robertson’s own goal before scoring the winner, is now set to recommit himself to being the club’s captain with a new contract close at hand.

Liverpool announcement of Virgil van Dijk contract extension imminent

Don Hutchison shared insider information on the Premier League’s Goal Rush programme, revealing that he has been told that Liverpool will get a deal sorted out to extend Virgil van Dijk’s contract.

“From what I’m hearing from inside, I think it will get done. It’s only a matter of time. The fact he was kissing the badge at the end in front of the Kop, he’s saying he loves the club, the fans love me. It’s only a matter of time.”

Van Dijk contract deserved, but goal should have been disallowed – Hutchison

While there is no denying that van Dijk – arguably the world’s greatest defender ever – deserves his new Liverpool contract, a case could be made that his winner against West Ham should have been ruled out.

At least, that’s the case Hutchison makes, saying: “I think it is only just. It’s not clear but what you’ve got to do if you’re Fulkrug is be stronger.

“You have got to be physical, you have got to be stronger. The fact that Fulkrug was a little bit light then there’s only one winner and you give him a free header in front of goal, the chances are he is going to score.”

Whether or not the goal should have stood is irrelevant now as Liverpool are within two wins of winning the Premier League.

Six more points makes the Reds’ lead at the top of the table unassailable and would see Arsenal and Chelsea give the league champions a Guard of Honour.
