Gary Neville is known for his bold Liverpool-related opinions and his new comments about the Premier League title race are typically knee-jerk.

It was a bad weekend for the Reds, who not only lost 2-1 away to Crystal Palace in the dying seconds, but also saw Arsenal nick a late win at Newcastle United.

In terms of momentum, a clear swing has taken place, but it is still early days in the season, with so many twists and turns to come.

Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, Neville claimed that Arsenal are the best team in the league, generally hinting that their victory over Newcastle already feels like a massive moment in the season:

“He’s got a brilliant squad. I think he’s got the best squad in the league and maybe are the best team in the league. I’ll say that quietly because Liverpool are excellent too. But only two teams can win this league: Liverpool or Arsenal. When the first goal went in, I said, ‘big’, and I thought the second one was coming, I genuinely did. I thought I could feel something happening in the ground. Those Arsenal players did too and it did happen.

“I think it’s a big moment. Look, it’s September, it’s ridiculous…it [the title race] doesn’t start until March. But what you’ve got to do along the way is send out some calling cards. You’ve got to send out some clear messages that we’re here and we’re proper, and that’s what I think Arsenal have done today.”

Another Neville prediction that will look foolish?

As mentioned, it was a bad few days for Liverpool, who aren’t fully clicking this season, but making big predictions in September feels unnecessary from Neville.

The Reds are still adjusting to the tragic death of Diogo Jota, as well as integrating new signings, yet they remain at the top of the Premier League table after six matches.

Arsenal are an excellent side who will be right in the mix come the end of the season, but one victory, having been criticised plenty in recent weeks, shouldn’t suddenly make them favourites and the best team in the country.

A big response is needed by Liverpool at Chelsea on Saturday evening, though, with the level of their performances needing to improve.
