Giorgi Mamardashvili’s role at Liverpool could develop more quickly than initially planned, with suggestions that the goalkeeper may be fast-tracked into becoming the club’s first-choice option.

The Georgian international was brought in as part of Liverpool’s long-term squad planning, but his situation has become more immediate due to ongoing uncertainty around the goalkeeping position.

Liverpool’s performances this season have included several defensive inconsistencies, leading to debate over whether changes are needed between the posts.

Liverpool’s performances this season have included several defensive inconsistencies, leading to debate over whether changes are needed between the posts.

Mamardashvili is highly regarded internally for his shot-stopping ability, presence in the box, and consistency, which has made him a strong candidate for a bigger role.

There is growing belief that Liverpool may not wait for a prolonged bedding-in period if current issues continue, particularly if results are impacted by errors in goal.

Ben Jacobs reports:Juventus are currently in talks with Alisson, and the Brazilian keeper is open to joining. However, Alisson is expected to approach any potential exit in the same manner as Andy Robertson in January.

“He has an excellent relationship with LFC and is not agitating to leave unless it suits all parties. Alisson is heading into the final year of his Liverpool contract. Should Alisson leave, Giorgi Mamardashvili will be given the chance as No.1 next season.

“LFC have done homework on keepers as part of due dillegence, but there is confidence in the existing group. Mamardashvili is still viewed as Liverpool’s long-term No.1.”

The club’s coaching staff are understood to be assessing all options as part of a broader review of squad performance, with no position considered fully fixed.

Mamardashvili’s potential rise would represent a significant shift in Liverpool’s defensive structure, especially given the importance of stability in goal for Arne Slot’s system.

However, any decision to promote him into the number one role would depend on consistency in training and match situations, as well as overall team balance.

For now, Liverpool are expected to continue rotating and evaluating before making a definitive call.

But the possibility of Mamardashvili stepping up sooner than expected is becoming increasingly realistic as the season progresses.
