Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing a colossal young player, but his current club are doing all they can to keep hold of him.
The Reds have suffered their first real misstep of the season, losing 2-1 away to Crystal Palace last weekend and seeing their lead at the top of the Premier League reduced to just two points.
Still, this is a Liverpool squad littered with world-class talent, with the likes of Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike still adjusting to life in a Liverpool shirt, and Arne Slot explained the reason to sign two strikers this summer:
“Yes, we’ve added two number nines. Because of an enormous tragedy that happened with Diogo Jota, in the end, we had to bring in two number nines. We always thought we were going to replace Darwin Nunez for one number nine. But in the end, we had to bring in two number nines. We’ve always been looking, we’re always looking for very good players, but it was always clear to us that from the start that we wanted to bring in these two (Isak and Ekitike), if we needed to.”
The Reds will be looking at further new additions moving forward, both in terms of immediate key men and youngsters who could have a huge future in the game, and an update has emerged regarding a player in the latter category.
According to Itatiaia [via Sport Witness], Brazilian side Gremio are looking to tie teenage goalkeeper Gabriel Menegon down to a long-term contract, in order to fend off interest from Liverpool.
Nottingham Forest are also keen on snapping up the 16-year-old, who at 1.96 tall is a colossal presence between the sticks, standing even taller than Virgil van Dijk.
A long-term Alisson replacement for Liverpool?
At 16, Menegon clearly isn’t going to be coming in as a key man for Liverpool from the off, but he could be looked at as the future No.1 for the Reds.
Alisson won’t be around forever, and while Giorgi Mamardashvili looks to have been pencilled in as his successor, nothing is stopping Menegon from growing into an even better ‘keeper than the Georgian.
Liverpool should always be looking to snap up the best young talent in the game, and in Menegon, they could have exactly that, potentially being the Reds’ next great Brazilian in goal at Anfield.
