Liverpool have laid the groundwork for a summer move for Athletic Bilbao forward Nico Williams and although nothing is certain yet, the player’s representatives have been in contact with the Reds and they are tracking his progress.

Whichever way you look at it, Liverpool are faced with a hugely important 2025 summer transfer window. Arne Slot could say goodbye to the world-class trio of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold but even if they stay, there is a lot of work to be done on the squad.

Slot needs to be praised for the fantastic job Liverpool have done under his guidance but even then, there are some issues within the squad that are going relatively unnoticed given the general level of the squad.

Centre-back needs more depth. Jarell Quansah’s appearance against Wolves proves this as, beyond him, there are no more available senior centre-backs. Joe Gomez is injured so when Ibrahima Konate came off after his yellow card, it once again revealed how exposed Liverpool’s defence is.

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Liverpool have held initial talks with the representatives of 22-year-old Nico Williams as they lay the groundwork for a potential move to Anfield in the summer.

“His people have held talks with his suitors, Liverpool included. It’s moving on in that respect,” says the journalist.

“He’s an option for Liverpool, they like him and they’re being kept aware of his situation. We’ll see how it progresses in the next few months and how serious he is about leaving Spain.”

Liverpool need to target more efficient players if they lose Salah

This season, Mohamed Salah has 28 goals and 19 assists in just 36 games and the Egyptian now looks like a shoe-in for a Ballon d’Or nomination if Liverpool can get their hands on some major silverware.

However, Williams has just four goals and six assists in 31 games for Bilbao. The 22-year-old is a fantastic player but if Liverpool lost Salah, they will have roughly 50 goals and assists to replace and Williams just doesn’t meet the standard that Salah is setting at Anfield.
