Liverpool signing Kevin De Bruyne this summer isn’t totally out of the question which would be the dream stop-gap solution to losing Trent Alexander-Arnold for free.
Any chances of FSG agreeing a shock contract extension for Alexander-Arnold are very remote at this stage of the season. Mohamed Salah has signed a new deal and Virgil van Dijk seems set to follow suit however.
De Bruyne is another high-profile player set to be available on a Bosman transfer this summer after 107 goals and 177 assists for Manchester City.
Oh, and six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, five League Cups and a Champions League winners’ medal.
Liverpool should be quietly paying very close attention as there is certainly a lot of life left in Kevin De Bruyne.
He may only have five goals and eight assists this season (poor for his high standards) but Manchester City’s attackers, aside from Erling Haaland, have not been putting away chances with the impunity we’re used to seeing.
Latest report suggests that De Bruyne joining Liverpool ISN’T out of the question
According to Belgian outlet De Standaard, Liverpool are not to be discounted from the long array of clubs that De Bruyne and his representatives will be taking into consideration this summer.
What can be ruled out is that De Bruyne will not be moving to Saudi Arabia or America but will remain in either the Premier League or move to another top league in Europe.
He ultimately wants to remain at the top level but the report also states that his grandfather’s affection for Liverpool is a factor as is the simplicity of simply commuting further – by driving to Merseyside – and therefore not needing to displace his family altogether.
Of course, you also have that famous old video of De Bruyne saying as an 11-year-old kid that his favourite club and player were Liverpool and Steven Gerrard.
He told the camera: “My favourite club is Liverpool and my favourite player is Michael Owen, and I would like to play there one day.”
Arne Slot could find exciting and timely solution to Trent Alexander-Arnold dilemma
Trent Alexander-Arnold has broken the hearts of fans with his reported desire to leave Liverpool for free in order to move to Real Madrid.
The less said the better until it’s confirmed but as things stand, it does appear he will be playing league football in Spain not Merseyside next season.
Yet, Arne Slot has the opportunity to sign a top replacement for right back – potentially a top defensive fullback – and sign KDB for free to fill provide the deep-lying playmaker role a bit like how Thiago Alcantara moonlighted at Anfield before he retired.
Conor Bradley has shown that he could be the heir to Liverpool’s no.66 and while De Bruyne would want high wages to join the Reds, he could be an inspired signing to give Slot even more time to think about how to approach the right-back role long-term.
