Liverpool have officially overtaken Manchester United in terms of commercial profit as a club for the first time and to mark the special occasion, they also embarrassed them in the transfer market.
This summer has seen Liverpool spend absurd amounts of money but unlike their rivals in recent years, it’s justified. The Reds have long operated within a relatively shoestring budget compared to the likes of Chelsea and the Manchester clubs.
Spending was always offset by sales and while that will be no different this summer, there is zero chance of Liverpool making a profit this summer with their net spend set to be in the red.
And if Liverpool are successful in their attempt to sign Alexander Isak, their spending could reach £400m depending on the fee that it would take to land the Swedish striker.
Arne Slot wants Isak even though a £79m package deal was just agreed and completed for the transfer of Hugo Ekitike – which is where United were once again humiliated by Liverpool.
Liverpool have returned to their perch and clearly intend to stay there

Liverpool equalled the 20 league titles that Manchester United so famously reached under Alex Ferguson’s guidance. The Scotsman famously knocked the Reds off their (expletive) perch.
However, one season under Slot and they’re on par with United and look likely to go on further and become the undisputed champions of England by winning #21 next season.
Ekitike will be a key part of this ambition and he rejected United to make the move to Anfield, the Athletic reports.
By the time Liverpool had already agreed a six-year contract with Ekitike, United reached out to his agents to enquire about a potential move to Old Trafford, but they were swiftly rejected as he was already destined for Anfield.
To make matters worse, Ekitike grew up supporting United and even in spite of that boyhood support, the Frenchman chose their arch-rivals Liverpool instead. Brutal.
Vikor Gyokeres also reportedly rejected the Red Devils for Arsenal.
It’s also not the first time United have arrived late to the party for a marquee Liverpool signing. The same thing happened in late 2017 before Virgil van Dijk secured a then club record £75m move to Liverpool.
