Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has suggested that Mohamed Salah needs to show more leadership, amid the Reds’ current struggles.

The Premier League champions look anything but that at the moment, with Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest a new low point in the season.

Too many Liverpool players have fallen way below the level expected of them, including Salah, who has looked lost by his legendary standards, with Jurgen Klopp rightly calling him “world-class” in the past.

Speaking on Sky Sports [via Yahoo], Carragher called for the Egyptian to show more leadership in tough times, rather than only talking when it suits him.

“I must say on the back of all these Liverpool defeats, it’s always Virgil van Dijk who comes out,” Carragher said.

“The captain should do that but there should be other players in that dressing room coming out and speaking for the club.

“A year ago, Mo Salah wasn’t shy in coming out and speaking about his own situation, about the club not offering him a contract. I only ever hear Salah speak when he gets Man of the Match or he needs a new contract.

“I’d like to see Mo Salah come out as one of the leaders, one of the legends of Liverpool, come out and speak for the team. It shouldn’t always be the captain.”

Does Salah need to show more leadership for Liverpool?

Carragher and Salah have had their issues, with the Egyptian calling out the former Liverpool centre-back after he was criticised by him last season, amid his ongoing contract issues.

It would be nice to see Salah showing a little more leadership, though, even though Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson are captain and vice-captain, respectively.

He is such an experienced player now, and a born winner, and Liverpool supporters would no doubt appreciate him showing his support for Arne Slot and demanding an improvement from the players.

That said, it would be wrong to be too harsh on Salah, who is still giving his all for the cause, and he will hopefully return to top form as soon as possible, with his exit to the Africa Cup of Nations edging closer.
