Liverpool are gearing up for a crucial summer transfer window, with key areas of the squad in need of reinforcement ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Arne Slot watched from the sidelines on Saturday, serving the second and final game of his ban for shouting at Michael Oliver, as Liverpool beat Southampton extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table to 16 points.

Arsenal do have two games in hand, however.

The Reds have kept a low profile in the market over the past 18 months, with Federico Chiesa and Giorgi Mamardashvili being the only major additions.

However, Slot, is now set to oversee significant changes to strengthen the squad.

Liverpool eye Alexander Isak as striker search intensifies

A major priority for Liverpool this summer is bolstering their attack, particularly in the central striker position. Darwin Nunez appears likely to leave after an inconsistent season, while Diogo Jota’s ongoing injury concerns have left the Reds short of reliable options.

Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak has emerged as a prime target, with transfer insider David Ornstein confirming Liverpool’s interest. Isak has been one of the Premier League’s most prolific forwards, netting 19 goals in 24 league appearances in the 2024/25 season.

According to Ornstein, Newcastle have placed a staggering £150 million valuation on the Swedish forward, making negotiations challenging.

Despite this, Fabrizio Romano has indicated that both Liverpool and Arsenal are prepared to test Newcastle’s resolve.

“Arsenal and Liverpool will both try, but Newcastle will push to keep him,” Romano stated on Threads, while also dismissing speculation linking Isak with a move to Manchester United due to Financial Fair Play constraints.

Milos Kerkez also on Liverpool’s radar

In addition to targeting a new striker, Liverpool are also looking to reinforce their left-back position.

Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez has emerged as a serious option, with Romano confirming that the Reds are in contact over a potential deal.

“Liverpool are in contact for Kerkez. He’s high on their list,” Romano revealed.

Bournemouth are reportedly demanding around £50 million for the Hungarian international, meaning a combined deal for both Isak and Kerkez could cost Liverpool in the region of £200 million.

Nunez expected to leave Anfield this summer

To offset potential spending, Liverpool are expected to sanction outgoings, with Darwin Nunez a likely departure. Romano reiterated that the Uruguayan forward could be on his way out this summer, stating:

“I think Darwin will leave Liverpool. So… let’s see who joins.”

Nunez has given Slot something to think about this week, assisting the winner against PSG and scoring the winner against Southampton.

Consistency has been his major issue but if he can continue in this vein of form, things can still change before the end of the season.
