After being sent off by referee Michael Oliver, Liverpool manager Arne Slot is at risk of being suspended for two games which could see him miss the massive game against Manchester City.

Despite dropping two points at Goodison Park, a draw in the Merseyside derby was enough to extend Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League table to 57 points. Arsenal are on 56 and both sides have now played the same number of matches.

The disappointment, however, does not come from the dropped points but how a Premier League referee once again spoiled what was an otherwise fiercely contested game.

Curtis Jones was rightfully shown a red card for his confrontation with Abdoulaye Doucoure, who was also dismissed, but all the available evidence suggests Michael Oliver acted rashly when he sent Arne Slot off.

Speaking on the Sky Sports Back Pages Podcast, Miguel Delaney reports what he’s hearing about Slot’s suspension.

“I mean, from all the noises so far, it does feel like a two-game ban is inevitable. The one thing is a potential review could go on for some time. And that’s going to be all the more interesting because it’s Johnny’s reference there just to see what was actually said because that is what will come out in these sort of reviews,” Delaney said.

“I mean, it’s interesting with Slot because he’s one of the stories of Liverpool’s season has actually been out. No matter the controversy, no matter the kind of energy or something, he’s very good at kind of taking the sting out of it, keeping composed and then ensuring the team gets on with its business. Obviously, in this case, they lost the last of an equaliser and it was a rare moment where Slot, not quite letting his guard down, but I suppose he got involved.

“Now, I was watching some of the footage, which makes it all the more conspicuous because I was trying to see what was said, what he did. And it’s interesting that he doesn’t seem to say much before Oliver pulls out the card to the shock of Virgil van Dijk.”

“I mean, look, it could come out tomorrow, I think, which would mean if he’s found guilty, he potentially misses the Wolves game. But I think the likelihood is right now that at least rumbles into next week. And he potentially will say he’s not on the bench for the City game.”
