A journalist from Egypt has made a worrying claim over Mohamed Salah’s contract situation at Liverpool with the offer the club has reportedly made extremely insulting if true.
Mohamed Salah’s ruthless goalscoring is nothing new and neither is his masterful creative streak, but this season the 32-year-old has taken it to a whole new level. In 37 appearances, Salah has 29 goals and 20 assists, playing a direct role in 49 goals.
With just one goal involvement till he hits a half-century for the season, it’s embarrassing that there is no guarantee he will be at the club in four months’ time.
Yet, that’s the situation Liverpool and FSG are in. Newly hired sporting director Richard Hughes has yet to make any ground in contract renewal talks between Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Three of the best players in the world are out of contract on July 1 and a new claim suggests that for Salah, at least, the offer on the table from Fenway Sports Group is insulting and laughable to say the least.
Journalist claims Mohamed Salah has been made a laughable contract offer by Liverpool
Mo Salah is currently on a £350,000 a week contract which makes him the third-highest player in the Premier League but Egyptian journalist Ahmed Atta now claims that Liverpool have offered him a new deal that would require him to take a substantial pay cut to stay at Anfield.
Atta was asked about Salah’s decision to speak out about his contract earlier this season and said that although, initially, he didn’t like Salah talking publicly amid talks with the club, he now understands why given the insulting nature of the alleged contract offer.
“It looks like he had some reasonable reasons [to speak out publicly] because the info I found out recently is that Liverpool made him just one formal offer,” Atta told Anfield Watch.
“It was like, we can say it’s like one month ago or one month and a half and it was less than what he’s getting now, not more or not even equal to what’s getting now.
“So it’s a big surprise me to be honest. I won’t say I’m a big fan of Salah.
“I was always irritated by his repeatedly talking about such things [contract matters]. But now he is convincing me that he has a very reasonable and convincing reason to talk about it. With such talent, with such performance and such influence in this team, he has all the reason to at least, at least have the same salary as he’s gaining now.
“But surprisingly, what I know now that recently he got a formal offer with less than not, not even close, by the way, not even close to his current salary. So I don’t know what Liverpool’s administration are thinking in Liverpool’s boardroom. I’m not sure what they have in mind.”
