Wataru Endo has spoken about his lack of playing time this season in an interview ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain.
The Reds travel to France today for the first leg of their Round of 16 clash with PSG and they head into the tie full of confidence after they beat Newcastle United 2-0 a week ago to stretch their lead at the top of the Premier League table to 13 points.
Under Arne Slot, Liverpool have been flying. One surprise element of the title challenge has been Ryan Gravenberch’s form this season. When Martin Zubimendi rejected a move to Anfield, Slot was forced to deploy Gravenberch in the no.6 role and he has more than excelled.
Now considered one of the very best midfielders in the league, it’s no surprise that the young Dutch midfielder is restricting the amount of game time Wataru Endo can receive.
When asked about how he is handling being on the bench so much, Endo explained to reporters: “It’s a little bit tough for me because I don’t play that much, but the thing I can do is help the team.
“The idea is to always help the team, and if I have the chance to play I go all in – that’s what I’m always thinking.”
The midfielder was then asked if he has had talks with Arne Slot about his role in the squad and if he feels the manager’s trust.
He replied: “He always told me that my attitude and what I’ve done with the team is always unbelievable.
“I feel like he trusts me a lot at the moment, and that’s what I always try to do (work hard). I’m happy to be here.
“As I’ve said, I will keep working hard in training and on the pitch as well.”
Liverpool are very luck to have someone like Endo
Title races are never straightforward and while it would be lovely if Liverpool could just romp their way to the title, they need someone like Endo who doesn’t care about aesthetics or his stats.
He just wants the ball back and as he has shown with cameos against Newcastle United and Manchester City, he is the best player at the club to bring on to protect a lead.
