Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer discussed Liverpool’s incredible Premier League title challenge and while they admitted injuries have been a factor, the “relentless” nature of the Reds’ season cannot be denied.

Liverpool moved into an even more commanding position in the Premier League title race this week, capitalising on more dropped points from Arsenal to make it 13 points clear at the top of the table.

Mohamed Salah was once again at the heart of Liverpool’s performance, assisting the second goal after Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring.

Arne Slot’s side made it look easy as they coasted against a depleted Newcastle side but when Eddie Howe has the likes of Alexander Isak fit for the Carabao Cup final, it will likely be a different story entirely. That said, it’s a good omen as Liverpool prepare for the first shot at silverware in two weeks.

The Rest is Football’ podcast, Lineker said: “The three favourites at the beginning of the season would have been Man City, Arsenal, and then probably Liverpool.

“I don’t think any of us tipped Liverpool to win the title because replacing [Jurgen] Klopp was always going to be different.

“I think it’s probably down to the injuries of the others, but I still think Liverpool would have been comfortably ahead.

“We’ve not had the Man City we’ve had in previous seasons, have we?”

Shearer then said: “Yeah, but Liverpool have only lost one league game – at home to Nottingham Forest. They’ve just been relentless.”

Liverpool have played a game more than Arsenal so their lead at the top could be reduced to 11 points if the Gunners win their game in hand but recent form suggests there will be more opportunities for Liverpool to capitalise on dropped points.
