Darwin Nunez has been linked with a stunning return to Liverpool this summer, and now reliable journalist James Pearce has dropped a key new update.
The Uruguayan was a popular figure in his first stint at Anfield, due to his personality and work ethic, but he was also frustrating, not hitting the heights that many expected of him.
Too often, Nunez’s all-round influence was lacking, with erratic finishing, patchy link-up and the potential to lose his head all standing out as negatives in his game.
Despite this, the 26-year-old has been backed to make a return to Liverpool this summer, with journalist Martin Charquero providing a big update on X on Monday:
“Darwin Nunez returns to Liverpool. The confirmation will not be given in these days since the player asked to be focused with the Uruguayan national team.”
But now, also taking to X, Pearce responded to speculation surrounding Liverpool re-signing Nunez, delivering a four-word answer that simply said: “Wide of the mark.”
Would Liverpool re-signing Darwin Nunez be good or bad?
Opinion appears to be split regarding a Nunez reunion at Liverpool, with some feeling that he could flourish under Andoni Iraola, having been praised by Jurgen Klopp during his first season with the Reds:
“He had absolutely more than an OK first season but he had to adapt, that’s done, and he is settled in the middle of the team. He loves to play for this team together with these boys and has quality coming out of his ears, to be honest. Is he at his absolute peak in general? Not now for us. But can he develop? Yes. Is he a threat all the time? Yes.”
But, as mentioned, Nunez is a flawed footballer who showed first time around that he is a limited footballer, so Liverpool should think against bringing him back to the club.
Granted, his high-octane style could work under Iraola, and he would be available on a free transfer after leaving Al-Hilal, but a superior striker needs to be looked at as a backup option to Alexander Isak, who will hopefully come alive next season.
