Reliable journalist James Pearce has now given a fresh update regarding Ibrahima Konate’s future at Liverpool, amid interest from Real Madrid.
The Frenchman has been an excellent servant for the Reds since arriving from RB Leipzig back in 2021, firmly establishing himself as Virgil van Dijk’s strongest centre-back partner.
Konate’s future has been a big talking point in recent months, however, due to his current deal expiring at the end of this season, and Madrid showing an interest in him.
The Spanish giants have already signed Trent Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer this year, and they will be able to do the same with the 26-year-old next summer, assuming he doesn’t sign an extension at Liverpool.
According to Pearce on X, there is still confidence from the Reds that Konate will remain at Anfield beyond 2026, but the player himself hasn’t yet made up his mind:
“With Giovanni Leoni facing a long spell out, Ibrahima Konate is more important to Liverpool than ever. After a tricky start to the season, the Frenchman has been outstanding in recent weeks. However, his future remains uncertain.
“Konate could sign pre-contract agreement with club overseas in just 98 days. However, sources close to player insist he’s yet to make decision over his future – dismissing reports he’s already given his word to Madrid. LFC still retain hope he will stay.”
A crucial player for Liverpool to tie down
Konate has his detractors at times, with some criticism coming his way after a below-par start to this season, but his performances have improved greatly in recent weeks.
He is a player coming into his peak years, so losing him at this point in his career would be a definite blow for Liverpool, especially if it means Madrid snapping up another one of their players on a free.
Hopefully, Konate ends up feeling that Liverpool are only heading in the right direction, with the club also offering him the wages he deserves as such a key starter.
He merits being thought of as a vital figure for Arne Slot, even though he has had injury problems down the years, so a new contract would be fantastic news. It feels like it could go either way, though.
