Mohamed Salah has confirmed he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, and Jamie Carragher hopes his departure ends in European glory.
Jamie Carragher believes the ideal farewell for Mohamed Salah would come not at Anfield, but on the biggest stage in European club football: the Champions League final.
Salah has announced that he will bring his Liverpool career to a close when the season ends. Since arriving from AS Roma in 2017, the Egyptian forward has cemented his place among the club’s greatest-ever players.
His message to the fans reads: “To the fans…I don’t have enough words. The support you showed me through the best time of my career, and you stood by me in the toughest times. It’s something I will never forget, and something I will take with me always. Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life. I will be always one of you. This club will always be my home, to me and to my family.
“Another big problem for Slot is he keeps making excuses. Sometimes you need to hold your hands up and say, look, we were second best on the day and we’re going to do out best to improve. Thank you for everything. Because of all of you, I will never walk alone.”
The Egyptian winger has scored 255 goals in 435 appearances for Liverpool, placing him third on the club’s all-time scoring list behind Ian Rush and Roger Hunt.
During his nine years at Anfield, Salah has collected an impressive haul of silverware, including two Premier League titles, the Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups.

His departure has not come entirely out of the blue. Despite playing a key role in Liverpool’s record-equalling 20th English league title last season, his performances have dipped noticeably this season. As a close friend, it’s clear to see how the passing of Diogo Jota has affected him particularly. Perhaps a change of scenery will do him the world of good.
If nothing changes, Salah’s final Premier League appearance for Liverpool will come against Brentford on the last day of the season.
However, with the Reds set to face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals next month, Carragher is hoping the club’s no.11 can sign off by helping deliver another European triumph.
Jamie Carragher hopes to see Mohamed Salah end Liverpool career with another Champions League trophy
Writing in his column for The Telegraph, Carragher addressed suggestions that past public disagreements between himself and Salah hinted at deeper tensions.
“There are those who will inevitably list the occasional public disagreements between Salah and myself over the years and claim there was some personal issue between us,” Carragher explained. “Let me be clear — as a player, I absolutely love Mohamed Salah.”
Carragher added that any criticism he directed toward Salah in the past was rooted in loyalty to Liverpool, not personal dislike.
“When he occasionally spoke publicly or posted on social media criticising the club or its decisions, my instinct was always to defend Liverpool,” he said. “That is the same principled approach I have taken when defending other clubs or managers who were being criticised. My loyalty has always been to Liverpool.”
The former defender believes Salah will eventually view Liverpool in the same way many former players do: as family.
“As a soon-to-be former Liverpool player, he will come to see the club where he made his name as part of his extended family,” Carragher said. “He will understand my point of view when anyone criticises Liverpool in the future.
“And while it is always sad to see a great player leave, nobody is irreplaceable. Another Anfield hero always emerges.”
Carragher also believes confirming his departure now ensures Salah will receive the emotional send-off his achievements deserve, praising the decision not to consider offers during the January transfer window.
However, he admitted he is not particularly interested in taking part in a traditional farewell celebration after Liverpool’s final Premier League match of the season.
“I have one final admission,” Carragher wrote. “While I will celebrate his career, I have no wish to be part of a grand Anfield farewell after the club’s last league fixture in May.”
Instead, Carragher believes there is a far more fitting ending in sight. One that would surpass any ceremony at Anfield.
“Every Liverpool fan has something far better and more dramatic in mind,” he said. “Knowing Salah’s mindset and competitive spirit, he will be targeting the greatest possible goodbye — leading Liverpool to victory in the Champions League final in Budapest.
