Liverpool wasted no time in replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold with Jeremie Frimpong with the scouser now set to move to Real Madrid.
Alexander-Arnold must have not followed Philippe Coutinho’s career after he left Liverpool and the famous quote from Jurgen Klopp that emerged from the whole saga.
Klopp famously said: “I told him stay here and they will end up building a statue in your honour. Go somewhere else, to Barcelona, to Bayern Munich, to Real Madrid, and you will be just another player. Here you can be something more.”
Now, there is every chance Alexander-Arnold makes a successful transition to life in La Liga but given his history of having a low defensive work rate and the way that Real Madrid fans have been known to turn on signings, time will tell how wise of a move this is.
For Liverpool, it has proven to be an afterthought with Liverpool moving extremely quickly to replace him.
In fact, the deal was completed before Alexander-Arnold had the chance to leave the club and Jamie Carragher believes it’s a deal that the club has been working on for longer than publicly known.
Jamie Carragher applauds Liverpool for reaction to Trent Alexander-Arnold saga
Jamie Carragher was speaking on Sky Sports’ The Overlap Fan Debate with Paul Scholes and the represenatives of the fans of various Premier League clubs.
While chatting about Liverpool and the Alexander-Arnold situation, it was mentioned by Carragher that Liverpool still need a centre-forward despite their speedy response to losing Trent to Madrid.
“Frimpong will fight for a good chance of playing with Conor Bradley, Florian Wirtz plays if he comes to the club, but I still think we need the centre forward,” Carragher said.
“I think Liverpool will look to get their business done really early. Because I think if they haven’t signed anyone for a year, we know how Liverpool, they’ll be in the background speaking to the agents six months ago.”
As for centre-forwards, Liverpool remain interested in Alexander Isak but signing him from Newcastle United will be far more difficult than negotiations have been with Bayer Leverkusen for Wirtz.
