Jeremy Jacquet was very impressive again for Liverpool and while his Premier League debut was difficult, it’s abundantly clear that the Frenchman is going to be a special player for the Reds.
Goals from Anthony Elanga in the fifth minute and Joe Willock after 57 minutes frustrated supporters, but Dominik Szoboszlai was able to rescue a point in the 98th minute with a penalty.
Cody Gakpo scored the first goal, but could do nothing about Liverpool’s midfield allowing Newcastle to charge at the back five. Jacquet and Virgil van Dijk will need to get used to defending almost completely alone until Andoni Iraola can fix the midfield.
Despite the time and patience needed to get the Reds back on course after the damage last season had on this squad, Jacquet looked like a breath of fresh air, and with a little more protection, he and van Dijk could form a very special partnership.

In many ways, Jacquet needed the disastrous nature of the 2-2 draw at St. James’ Park to gain an understanding of how ruthless the Premier League is. When players make mistakes, they are always punished.
If your midfielders are caught lacking, they are punished. Yet, Jacquet was able to thwart a number of attacks that could have been a lot worse.
His stats, via Sofascore, paint a beautiful picture of his debut. He won 100% of his ground and aerial duels, made just one foul, but completed one interception, tackle and clearance apiece.
Jacquet’s passing was also excellent. With a 90% accuracy, he misplaced just four passes, with two of them being long balls. The type of passes he was playing were also a lot better than the ones Ibrahima Konate would play. Jacquet is a master at breaking the lines and got Liverpool up the pitch in a flash, which I expect will soon become a feature of Liverpool’s system.

He also burst forward with the ball in the style of Joel Matip, which I really enjoyed. It resulted in a Milos Kerkez shot and is just another positive about his display.
