Joel Matip made a welcome return to Anfield ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Tottenham, offering a rare glimpse into his life since stepping away from professional football.

The former defender, who spent eight years at the club, has largely stayed out of the spotlight since retiring. Known for his quiet personality during his playing days, it came as little surprise that his post-football life has followed a similar pattern.

When asked what he has been doing since calling time on his career, Matip gave a typically understated response. “There’s nothing special to update,” he smiled. “Just enjoying time with the family, that’s all.”

It’s a simple answer, but one that reflects his grounded nature. While many former players move into media or coaching roles, Matip appears content embracing a slower pace of life away from the game.

His return to Anfield clearly meant a lot, though. Seeing familiar faces and stepping back into a stadium where he enjoyed so much success brought back positive memories. “It’s wonderful to be back here, to be back in this stadium to hopefully see a wonderful game. I’m really looking forward to it,” he said.

Matip also took the opportunity to praise former teammate Virgil van Dijk, highlighting the respect that still exists between the pair. “He’s a wonderful guy, a wonderful player and it’s a pleasure to be here to see him playing again.”

For Liverpool supporters, his appearance served as a reminder of his importance during a successful era. Despite often flying under the radar, Matip was a key figure in some of the club’s biggest achievements.

Now, rather than chasing trophies, he seems happy focusing on family life. An understated but fitting next chapter for one of Liverpool’s most quietly effective players.
