Ryan Gravenberch has been simply wondrous for Liverpool this season and John Obi Mikel has now compared him to injured Manchester City player and the current Ballon d’Or holder, Rodri.

By the far the biggest surprise of the season is Liverpool’s no.38, Gravenberch. The Dutch midfielder has reached an entirely new level under Arne Slot and his form this season has been a huge factor in Liverpool’s Premier League title challenge.

Currently 13 points clear of Arsenal, the Reds are in a hugely commanding position to lift the title this season but without Gravenberch, things may not look as pretty as they do.

Slot wanted to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad in the summer but the Spanish midfielder rejected their approach, forcing Slot to convert Gravenberch, a natural no.8, into a holding midfielder.

Speaking on his podcast, the former Chelsea midfielder compared Ryan Gravenberch to Manchester City midfielder Rodri.

The Ballon d’Or-winning midfielder is out injured thanks to an ACL rupture and in his absence, Gravenberch has risen to prominence.

“So because I am one, I play in my position. When I see a player who’s doing so well, I become a huge fan.

“And for me, Gravenberch the way he plays, not only defending, breaking up players when he has the ball, you know, he drives the ball forward, he pushes the team forward.

“For me, I like, it’s a bit like Rodri. And for me, he’s been absolutely fantastic, really.

“I feel like players in your position, like even when you were playing, I feel like… We never get the credit.”

Liverpool can now save their budget for more important areas of the pitch

Thanks to Gravenberch’s incredible form, Liverpool can now save their transfer budget to spend on other areas of the squad.

Depending on Liverpool’s contract negotiations, Slot may well be set for a very busy transfer window after spending this season identifying areas to improve and areas that are fine as they are.

At the start of the season, Slot may have believed he needed to spend big money on a new no.6, but that will have changed.

Liverpool potentially have a no.6 for the next decade if Gravenberch (22) can continue in this vein of form for the long-term.
