Liverpool have been linked with a shock move for former striker Darwin Nunez this summer, and now journalist Pete O’Rourke has provided a big new update.
The Uruguayan joined the Reds as a big-money signing in the summer of 2022, with huge things expected of him after shining at Benfica.
But Nunez ended up failing to justify his price tag, despite sporadic good moments and being a popular figure with the supporters, and he left last summer.
Despite this, the 26-year-old’s return to Liverpool has been mooted of late, with new head coach Andoni Iraola potentially seeing him as ideal for his system.
Speaking to Football Insider, however, O’Rourke has poured cold water on the shock transfer rumour, describing it as “pie in the sky”:
“I don’t think Liverpool, right now, have any plans to sign Nunez and bring him back to Anfield, having let him leave three years ago to make that move to Saudi Arabia. So yeah, I think it’s a bit of a pie in the sky that one, that Nunez could be going back to Anfield.”

While there has seemed to be some support for Liverpool re-signing Nunez ahead of next season, not bringing him back to Anfield is the correct decision.
For all of his passion and ability to score big goals, the Uruguay striker showed in his first spell with the Reds that he lacks elite attributes in aspects of his game.
Too often, Nunez’s touch and decision-making let him down, and his finishing can be erratic, while he even has the potential to be sent off in games, as he showed at home to Crystal Palace early in his Liverpool career.
He has had his chance already at Anfield, and flattered to deceive, and if Iraola does target a new striker in the summer transfer to provide competition for Alexander Isak, a superior option is required.
If there were suddenly a shock twist and Nunez did return to Liverpool, it wouldn’t be the end of the world, but it is easy to see him being a hit-and-miss performer once again.
