Liverpool are “99%” likely to sign a new winger before the end of the summer transfer window, according to a new claim from reliable journalist Lewis Steele.
Victor Munoz is the Reds’ only signing of the summer to date, but it is still early days, and there are likely to be various new faces brought in for Andoni Iraola.
Speaking to The Redmen TV [via Empire of the Kop], Steele said he would be shocked if Liverpool didn’t bring in another winger, hinting that it is all but certain:
“If I say 100%, I’ll get hounded out of Anfield by the fans the next time I’m there if they don’t! Yeah, I’m 99% [sure] they’ve got to sign a winger. You can’t let the best player of the last decade, and fourth in the all-time list, leave and not replace him.
“I know they signed Victor Munoz but I think the plan was always to do two forwards. With respect to Munoz, I think he was the second [choice] forward. It was a bit of a dagger in the heart to miss out on Diomande, as it appears that’s going to be the case, but they’ve clearly got money there if they bid £80m for Diomande a few weeks ago.
“They’ve got the money to do it and I’d be very surprised if they don’t [sign a winger]. They won’t sign someone for the sake of it. There’s four or five options that they’ve really done the work on, so I think we can say 99% sure. A winger was always a priority this summer.”
Liverpool HAVE to sign at least one more winger
It would be both surprising and unacceptable if Munoz is Liverpool’s only wide addition this summer, and it is almost impossible to see that happening.
A top-quality successor to Mohamed Salah is essential, and while there aren’t many elite wide players on the market, there are enough for the Reds to consider.
Paris Saint-Germain star Bradley Barcola appears to be a leading choice, but he is more of a left-sided attacker, while Yan Diomande would be a dream option on the right, should he choose Liverpool over PSG.
It could even be argued that the Reds need two wingers, in terms of squad depth, but that may depend on transfer funds, with other positions such as right-back and midfield also needing to be looked at.
