Liverpool have been linked with a move for Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton many times of late, and now an encouraging update has dropped.
The Reds struggled in so many positions in 2025/26, from right-back to wide attacking areas, with Mohamed Salah far from the force of old.
The centre of Liverpool’s midfield was also a huge issue, though, with Alexis Mac Allister hard to watch at times, in terms of his lack of pace, and Ryan Gravenberch failing to replicate last season’s brilliance.
A new midfielder is a must for Liverpool in the summer transfer window, and Wharton is one player who has constantly been mentioned as a leading option for the Reds.
The 22-year-old was arguably unlucky not to make England’s 2026 World Cup squad, and he has the long-term potential to be a future midfield great.
According to reliable journalist David Lunch on Anfield Index’s Media Matters [via Yahoo], “the deal is there for them to do if they want to”, and “they can just do it now.”
Adam Wharton a fantastic player, but are injuries a concern?
It does feel as though Liverpool are in pole position to sign Wharton this summer, which is so exciting, with Eberechi Eze having this to say about him during their time together at Palace:
“He’s very calm, composed, and a joy to play with. For someone so young, he’s very mature and very wise. When you speak to him, it feels like you’re speaking to someone older than you, that’s the type of person he is. He’s an incredible player.”
In many ways, the £60m-rated Wharton is very un-English in style, in terms of his elegance and ability to dictate a midfield battle from deep, but he is also effective out of possession, as highlighted by an average of 2.1 tackles per game in the Premier League this season.
The only concern surrounding the youngster is his injury record – he limped off on the final day away to Arsenal – and if Liverpool are spending such big money on a player, they must be confident that he will remain fit.
But if the Reds believe this will be the case, they should go all in on Wharton, who could be a fabulous addition at the heart of the midfield for many years.
