Liverpool are “definitely” going to look to sign more than one centre-back in the summer transfer window, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Reds were hapless in their 1-1 draw at home to Tottenham on Sunday afternoon, once again looking poor at the heart of the defence.

Joe Gomez came in for Ibrahima Konate, but was arguably just as bad as the Frenchman was against Galatasaray last week, highlighting the issues that Liverpool have.

Both players are still far from guaranteed to be staying at Anfield beyond the summer, but even if they do, added depth is surely required.

Jeremy Jacquet is already coming in from Rennes in the summer, but speaking to Football Insider, O’Rourke said he expects more than one central defender to potentially arrive:

“We know Liverpool are probably going to have a big overhaul in the centre of their defence come the summer. Ibrahima Konate’s future is still up in the air, we don’t know if he’s going to sign a new deal or leave the club on a free transfer.

“Virgil van Dijk isn’t getting any younger, and then Joe Gomez doesn’t have long left on his contract, could he potentially be moved on as well? There are definitely going to be ins and outs in that central area for Liverpool. They’ve got a deal done for Jacquet and they’re waiting to welcome back [Giovanni] Leoni.

“But if Konate does leave and possibly Gomez too, they’re going to have to bring in reinforcements, and they’re looking at a number of replacements. It’s going to be a big summer transfer window for Liverpool, especially in that central area of their defence.”

An extra centre-back is a must for Liverpool this summer

Watching Liverpool is a painful experience this season, with so many issues all over the pitch, not least the quality of their defending at key moments.

Virgil van Dijk is doing his best to hold the back-line together, but even he isn’t blameless, and fresh blood is badly needed ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

Jacquet will hopefully be a fantastic young signing, representing the future of the defence along with Giovanni Leoni, but a more experienced head would also be ideal.

Someone in the mould of Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck or Spurs ace Micky van de Ven would make the most sense, with both in their mid-20s and linked with Liverpool, possessing experience but also time to improve further.
