Liverpool are assessing their options as the summer transfer window fast approaches and with the Reds set to defend a Premier League title next season, Anfield is a very attractive destination.

Mohamed Salah has been in dazzling form this season – the Egyptian has 32 goals and 23 assists – but his attacking teammates have not been quite as prolific.

Darwin Nunez will almost certainly leave the club while Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota are also linked with exits. It’s currently unclear who will be sold and who will stay but Liverpool are in the mix for a few strikers.

Alexander Isak is obviously the dream option but Liverpool will not enter the race for his signature unless Newcastle United reduce their £150million asking price.

Another exciting target is Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike but he is now being described as too raw for a player that could cost £68m.

David Lynch is “increasingly sceptical” regarding Liverpool move for Ekitike

Liverpool are not as seriously interested in signing Hugo Ekitike as rumours are making them out to be, reports Liverpool journalist David Lynch.

He says that Liverpool would be taking a huge risk replacing Darwin Nunez with Ekitike.

In terms of progressing with Ekitike, I’m increasingly sceptical,” Lynch said.

“That price tag is outrageous for someone as raw as he seems, and to go from Nunez to him would feel a little bit like going out of the frying pan and into the fire, he seems to me to be rough on the edges.

“The thing that’s making me sceptical is that I haven’t really been given any encouragement on the name from the Liverpool side as someone that’s been talked about a lot on the training ground or someone they’re raving about.”

Liverpool need a world class striker, especially if Mohamed Salah is leaving in two years

Liverpool may have signed Salah to a lucrative two-year contract extension but the Egyptian is still a player that the club knows will be leaving soon. Of course, it’s huge news for the Reds but extending his deal does also give the club the time and space to look to the future.

If Salah is going to leave, Liverpool need a world class attacker bedded in by the time he bids farewell to Anfield.

Ekitike is an exciting player but if he isn’t a guaranteed game-changer, Liverpool should be very careful about spending £68m on him.
