Liverpool would likely guarantee themselves as Premier League title favourites for the 2025/26 season if they signed Alexander Isak in the summer but Newcastle United are not considering selling him with the Reds yet to make contact.
Liverpool were linked with a player-plus-cash deal which would have involved sending Darwin Nunez to St. James Park in exchange for Alexander Isak. This, however, is not something Newcastle United would consider as they don’t intend on selling the Swede.
Shields Gazette reports: “While Newcastle were previously credited with an interest in Nunez prior to his move to Liverpool, The Gazette understands that it’s not a deal the club would be interested in pursuing further given Isak’s importance to Eddie Howe’s side.”
Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano reports for GiveMeSport that Liverpool are yet to make contact over a potential move to sign Isak with the striker focused on the season at hand.
Romano reports: “Nothing ongoing in terms of contacts now for Isak, full focus on Newcastle. Time for talks and decisions on future will be in the summer.”
Isak and Newcastle will face Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final next month which will add an interesting spin to this transfer story.
Isak would be contender for “signing of the season”
While the early indications are that Newcastle will fight tooth and nail to keep Isak, it’s still exciting to imagine the 6 foot 4 striker in this Liverpool team.
Assuming Liverpool keep Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, adding Isak into the mix would be one of the few signings that Arne Slot can make that would truly transform this side. There’s so much quality on show that only truly special players can now move the needle and Isak certainly matches that description.
Speaking to Anfield Index, Jermain Pennant made the argument that Liverpool signing Isak would be the signing of the summer.
“Isak would be absolutely fantastic for any team. He would be signing of the season if he joined Liverpool!
“I actually believe that the amount of goals that he guarantees would make Liverpool title favourites again next year!
“The smart thing to do would be to sell Darwin Nunez and use the money from that sale to bring in Isak.
“Whether he plays alongside or without Salah, Liverpool need another forward that can guarantee 18-20 league goals every single season.”
Just imagine a front three of Mohamed Salah, Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo. That’s a trio that has everything. Pace, power, technical skill, movement, goals, creativity, pressing – the whole lot.
Isak has 19 goals and five assists this season and with a few months to go, that number will surely increase considerably before the campaign ends.
