Robbie Fowler has come to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s aid over claims the fullback isn’t a good defender after a rocky performance against Bournemouth.
Amid links to Real Madrid and questions over his expiring Liverpool contract, it’s an auspicious time for things to be going badly for Trent on the pitch.
His performance against Bournemouth left a lot to be desired and when he was withdrawn with a thigh injury, it capped off a miserable day for the fullback.
Questions were asked after full-time about his defensive display for the umpteenth time. The 25-year-old is a lot better defensively than he gets credit for but often his body language and intensity when tracking back speak of a player that doesn’t want to defend.
In a game where he didn’t defend well at all, it certainly didn’t help that his passing didn’t measure up to his typical class as he misplaced 21 passes. It’s fair to say his form is becoming something of a problem for Slot to consider.
Speaking on the Line Up, Fowler was asked if Trent’s defending is a major problem for Liverpool.
He said: “No, not at all. When you’re playing for a club like Liverpool, there’s a chance you’re going to have more possession, so you need players like Trent to deliver chances for everyone else.
“Let’s also not forget that he’s won everything playing for an unbelievably top team in Liverpool.
“Defensively, he is good, but we do get sort of critical that he could be too further forward, but that isn’t down to him, that’s likely the manager saying: ‘Go play forward.’”
Liverpool fans are praying that Trent signs a new deal with Liverpool and rejects interest from Real Madrid to continue the wonderful story he has with the club but the longer the season drags on without news of an extension, the more it seems likely he will be making the move to La Liga.
The same can be said of Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah although neither has been very strongly linked with a transfer yet but we will just have to wait and see how things pan out.
