Liverpool are said to be interested in signing an “outstanding” England international in the summer transfer window, according to journalist Jack Gaughan.

The Reds look set to be closing in on the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, with reports from reliable sources suggesting that a move is close.

Other exciting Liverpool transfer rumours have also emerged in recent days, not least ones regarding Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz, who is also wanted by the likes of Manchester City and Real Madrid.

Now, The Daily Mail‘s Gaughan claims that the Premier League champions are interested in signing Crystal Palace and England midfielder Adam Wharton this summer.

Liverpool are believed to be “monitoring the situation” of the 21-year-old, who isn’t out of contract at Selhurst Park until the summer of 2029.

Is Wharton a perfect summer addition for Liverpool?

Wharton is a player with such a bright future in the game, already cutting such a composed figure in the middle of the park for Palace, making 20 Premier League appearances this season.

His quality hasn’t been lost on many, from teammates to pundits, and Alan Shearer is someone who has spoken so positively about him:

“When I was at Blackburn, six or seven weeks ago, they told me about the transfer. They said they had to sell him for obvious reasons. They felt as if Palace had got a great deal. They wanted to and needed to get more for him but such was the need to sell.  They said Palace got him on the cheap. I understand why today. I’ve been watching him and he’s been really impressive. Today he was, without doubt, he ran that midfield. When you consider who he was against and the fact it was at Anfield. That’s a pretty big thing to say but he was outstanding.”

Wharton is a cultured midfielder who can sit deep and run the show from a No.6 role, and he could be ideal competition for the likes of Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister.

He could develop hugely under Arne Slot, also benefiting from playing alongside some world-class footballers, so the idea of him being at Anfield is exciting.
