Liverpool are reportedly planning talks with an “extraordinary” attacking player ahead of next season, as Arne Slot looks to make key additions.
The Reds are Premier League champions!
Slot, his players and supporters alike are basking in the glory of Sunday’s 5-1 win at home to Tottenham, as a 20th league title was confirmed at Anfield.
It was a special day after a remarkable season for Liverpool, but they will know that there are further levels that they can still reach in the coming years.
New signings are needed in several areas, from left-back to centre forward, and it would be a surprise if a second attacker also didn’t come in.
According to Caught Offside, Liverpool are “planning to hold talks” with Atalanta attacker Ademola Lookman ahead of the summer transfer window, with the Nigerian once at Everton.
The Reds aren’t the only Premier League club mentioned as suitors, however, with Chelsea, Manchester United, Newcastle United and Arsenal all mentioned in the report, too.
A strong option for Liverpool’s attack
Lookman has come on so much as a player since his Everton days, becoming a genuinely impressive top-level player, scoring a hat-trick in last season’s Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen.
The 27-year-old has continued his good form this term, scoring 18 goals in Serie A and the Champions League combined, while Gian Piero Gasperini has said of him:
“He’s [Lookman] a top player. In terms of character, there are perhaps players who have more continuity and are more solid, but that’s normal. Even his role is difficult. He always has to be very fit, but he has become a truly extraordinary player, among the best in Europe and the world. Because he has improved his consistency and in some ways he has started to be an important Atalanta player.”
At 27, Lookman may be slightly older than the profile of attacking player that Liverpool are looking at, but he could still be an excellent addition, proving capable of thriving centrally or wide.
He is right in his peak years and could hit the ground running in a Reds shirt – the fact that he used to be Everton would be the icing on the cake, in terms of it going down badly on the blue half of Merseyside.
